My Life in Lockdown

by Disability and Faith Forum ⋅ 3 Comments
The camera is behind Ray and shows him sitting in his wheelchair using his computer. A church service is on the screen. His Dynavox computer is attached to his wheelchair tray and the alphabet is visible on the screen. Ray has brown hair, and light skin.

“I was born with cerebral palsy which makes it challenging for me to speak or use my arms and legs. … It is difficult for me to express my thoughts and ideas to people who do not know me very well because many do not understand the way I talk or type. This takes patience and practice.” … Read More →

Power in weakness

by Disability and Faith Forum ⋅ Leave a Comment
A closeup photo of two people holding hands. One has light skin (white) and one has skin that is a bit darker (brown).

One of my fears is that we are losing the ability as a society to help someone who experiences a disability or is suffering in some way, because we are afraid of doing or saying the wrong thing. … Read More →

Luke 17 – The Grateful Samaritan

by Disability and Faith Forum ⋅ 1 Comment
Three white women lean close together and smile at the camera. The woman on the left has down syndrome, and is standingthe woman on the right is making the "I Love You" sign to the camera and is seated. The woman in the middle has her arms around both other women and is drawing all three together.

In today’s world, people with disabilities are largely ‘othered’, and there’s movement of self-advocacy afoot among them. There’s no telling what can happen when people unite across differences. … Read More →

“The Strange World of COVID-19”

by Disability and Faith Forum ⋅ Leave a Comment
A Bible lays open on a backdrop of red and orange autumn leaves.

Having journaled for years, recently I went to a digital platform for my journal, so I’ve begun to transcribe my old, hand-written journals into the new platform. It’s a painstakingly slow project, and the strange world of COVID-19 has prompted its resumption. … Read More →

Reflections on cemeteries, water, and how I am like a willow tree

by Disability and Faith Forum ⋅ 1 Comment
A willow tree stands tall in front of a blue sky with white clouds.

Then it finally dawned on me. The tree is a metaphor for life. It is weighed down by its branches but yet keeps growing taller and taller towards the sky. … Read More →

Pack Light

by Disability and Faith Forum ⋅ Leave a Comment
Four vintage suitcases are stacked on top of each other and fill the entire frame.

Jesus instructed his disciples to “pack light” for their mission (Matthew 10:9-10). When it comes to the mission of supporting people who experience disabilities, there are a few transferable principles from this passage of scripture that we can apply. … Read More →

People with Disabilities and the Church During and After the Coronavirus Crisis

by Disability and Faith Forum ⋅ 1 Comment
The viewer stands at the back of a church, looking towards the front. Many empty pews stretch out in front of the camera. People are sitting near the front. A cross is hanging on the wall above the altar.

How did these COVID-19 restrictions affect people with disabilities, many of whom already felt unwelcome or ignored by their church even in normal times? … Read More →

Remember Us

by Disability and Faith Forum ⋅ 3 Comments
Andrea and her husband stand outside with their kids - one young man and three young women. The youngest two are twins, and they are looking off to the side while everyone else looks at the camera. Everyone is smiling and dressed in shades of blue. One of the twins is wearing a dress like Anna's from the movie Frozen.

Dear Church,
As restrictions are being lifted and you plan for being together in person once again,

please think of us… … Read More →

A poem – Beloved

by Disability and Faith Forum ⋅ Leave a Comment
The sun rises over a city filled with skyscrapers, shining long beams of light onto various buildings.

In every season, in every storm
In moments of questions
In moments of fear
In moments when everything seems so unclear
Be still and know that you are loved … Read More →
