For five years, Monica Theysen has been a dedicated team member at The Raw Carrot in Innerkip, where she’s found more than a job—she’s found a purpose. Her role here isn’t just about earning a paycheck; it’s about being a part of something greater, something transformative.

The Raw Carrot, an outreach program run by a church community, provides meaningful, permanent employment for individuals who, like Monica, live on the margins of society and income due to disabilities and mental illness. It’s a powerful example of a “hand up” rather than a “handout,” building both livelihoods and dignity for those who might otherwise be overlooked.

“Her role here isn’t just about earning a paycheck; it’s about being a part of something greater, something transformative.”

Monica shares her story to inspire churches everywhere to join this mission. Together, we can address poverty and insecurity with a model of faith in action—one that brings hope and justice into communities across Canada.

For the past five years, I’ve had the joy and privilege of being employed at The Raw Carrot at Innerkip Presbyterian Church, a ministry that not only provides meaningful employment and monthly income but also nurtures a community of faith and support for individuals living with disabilities. Reflecting on my journey here, I feel led to share how deeply rewarding this experience has been—not only in my work but in my spiritual growth—and to encourage other churches to consider starting a Raw Carrot site of their own.

When I began working at The Raw Carrot, I was still fairly new to Christianity. The opportunity to work in a faith-centered environment was something I treasured from day one. Every morning, our team gathers to start the day with a Bible verse and prayer. This practice grounds me, reminding me of God’s presence and guidance in my life, even before the tasks of the day unfold. It’s a gift to feel God’s closeness right at the start of my workday, setting the tone for everything we do.

Beyond the daily routines, the relationships I’ve formed at The Raw Carrot have been a huge part of my spiritual journey. The volunteers here are not just coworkers; they are mentors and friends who have helped me deepen my understanding of God. Over time, they have helped me grow stronger in my faith, offering encouragement, wisdom, and friendship as I’ve taken steps in my walk with Christ. It’s been amazing to feel supported and connected to a faith community within my workplace—a rare and precious thing.

What’s more, I’ve had the chance to see the Spirit move through the lives of my coworkers. One of my most cherished memories is introducing a coworker to the Church and watching the spark of faith grow in her. Witnessing this transformation firsthand has been incredibly inspiring, reminding me of the power of God’s love to change lives. I’ve seen how working in this environment, that embraces faith and provides support and purpose, has brought light to many.

The Raw Carrot is about more than just employment; it’s a ministry that embodies love and hope for people who are often overlooked. Our work here is not only about making soup; it’s about building confidence, community, and faith. There is no doubt in my mind that God is at the helm of The Raw Carrot, guiding us all as we work together.

To any church considering how it might better serve individuals who are living on the margins and create a faith-based community that makes a permanent impact through sustainable income and dignity, I would wholeheartedly recommend exploring the possibility of launching a Raw Carrot site. The rewards are far greater than I ever imagined. In helping others find purpose and joy in their work, I have been blessed with the richness of community and the deepening of my faith. This journey has truly shown me what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus.
